Abstract

In the neoliberal era, the intellectual precariat is becoming increasingly prevalent. This writing attempts to explore what makes these academic staff part of the precariat, and how they navigate the vulnerabilities they face. The aim of this research is to illustrate what life is truly like for the precariat of academic workers. The data in this writing comes from the initial findings of an ethnographic field study and is based on data collection techniques using observation, in-depth interviews, and casual interviews. To ensure the safety of researchers and informants, this study employs double anonymity. The findings indicate that the type of SK held by academic staff significantly influences their claims to access. In addition, the salary they receive is also low and fluctuating, which affects their well-being. The way to navigate through work life is by having a side hustle. Institutions and policies can help them escape the precariat class, but both can also be the cause of the intellectual precariat status they experience.
